A few words from … Dame Harriett Baldwin MP
Regulator update on heating oil pricing review!
Dame Harriett Baldwin MP has met with the competition regulator and asked for an update on its review into local oil supplies and liquid petroleum gas. The Competition and Markets Authority pledged to carry out a review after the MP shared local people’s concerns about profiteering as fuel prices rocketed during the conflict across the Middle East.
Dame Harriett met with the CMA and heard about their work investigating heating oil suppliers and acting on any evidence of price gouging. The regulator has also completed an investigation into petrol and diesel stations and confirms there is a rural penalty. Heating oil and gas prices remain high and fuel at the petrol pumps remains inflated causing a huge impact on the cost of living for local people.
The Government pledged a £50 million package to help people who have been hit with higher-than-expected heating costs but the assistance was focussed on people already receiving some form of benefit support.
Dame Harriett said: “I wrote to the Competition and Markets Authority sharing local evidence of significant shifts in supplier behaviour and I took the opportunity to repeat my concerns at a recent meeting. The crisis in the Middle East continues to have an impact on the price of oil and gas and although some wholesale costs are coming down they seem to be slow to be passed on to customers. I saw clear evidence of bad behaviour in my postbag and I am hoping that the CMA will act swiftly to investigate the supply of oil and gas to rural areas which rely on tanks rather than a mains connection.”

Our Book Collection
Designed in-house
‘Thought Plants’ is a new collection of writing and poems exploring ideas, events and everyday life. At times serious and thoughtful, at others enjoying the whimsical, lighter side of things. It has grown surprisingly well from early seeds and a fertile imagination.
This is the first of Reg’s gardening handbooks, designed to be both a guide to people just starting their gardening journey and a handy reminder for more experienced gardeners.
It contains a Monthly Jobs Guide and advice on an array of things you are likely to be doing in your garden, including: seed sowing, feeding plants, looking after roses and lawns, pruning, growing fruit vegetables, hanging baskets and bedding plants, as well as choosing compost and a ‘right shrub, right situation’ section.
This book contains not only a fine collection of Cotswold landscape paintings by the late Peter Hodge, for which he was best known, but also images and insights from his many and diverse forays into graphics, surrealism, ceramic and textile design.
Told with down-to-earth honesty and humour, he comments on the paradoxical quirkiness of creating art; balancing integrity and enthusiasm with the demands of making a living in the precarious world of artistic endeavour.
Four generations of printing
Printing is a family way of life for a Pershore business. When you choose Hughes & Company, you can be assured that you are not only getting top quality service, but you are also getting the benefit of four generations of experience.
Alan Hughes’ grandfather was a printer, so was his father and mother. You could say it is in his blood. Alan draws on experience gained in all aspects of the industry, from working as an apprentice with his father to becoming Managing Director of a UK software company developing computer typesetting systems for a global market. He then managed a large multi-business group in South Africa, before returning to the family business. With his son, Andrew, ‘the fourth generation’, they carry on the tradition of offering quality printing services for any job, no matter how large or small.
Members of the Royal Family and the late President H.W. Bush have had books which were produced by Hughes & Company and, recently, two books won prestigious awards in the United States.
